THE STATUES OF EL TORNO, A PLACE TO REMEMBER THE FORGOTTEN

Few sculptures tremble as much as these. The première fois that je les ai vus, c'était, par hasard, dans un émission de télévision dont je ne souviens même pas maintenant et aujourd'hui, quand je les vois enfin in personne, I thought that you voyage ici en valait The sorrow.

These are four human figures that represent the memory of those forgotten by the civil war and the Franco dictatorship and repression that followed, as well as all those people who were imprisoned, tortured, exiled or displaced during this period. The figures are made up of a woman, an old man and two young people, life-size and located on the edge of a viewpoint in the small town of El Torno, on large granite stones and where you can contemplate the entire wonderful valley that you can see. del Jerte, in Cáceres.

The characters seem confused, looking into infinity, as lost or wandering along paths they do not know. This was the message of the work of the sculptor Francisco Cedenilla and, without a doubt, he carried it out.

Just looking at them makes you shudder.

Very few sculptures are as moving as these. The first time I saw them was, by chance, on a TV show that I don't even remember right now, and today I finally see them with my own eyes and I think my trip here was worth it.

The work took 3 years to complete, ending in December 2008 and inaugurating on January 24, 2009. Within hours of said inauguration, 3 of the 4 people (those representing men) were shot dead with a hunting weapon. , producing the holes well. It is shocking that some personalities who represented those shot dead during the war and the dictatorship suffered such an act. The author himself said that he did not want the artwork to be fixed, leaving it like that, showing that hatred and resentment last longer than you think.

Cedenilla's work was brought together with the help of the Jerte Valley Youth Association and appears in "El silencio de los otros", a 2018 documentary, directed by Almudena Carracedo and Robert Baha r, which portrays the silent struggle of the victims of the dictatorship.

The point of view of memory is a silent cry in the middle of the vastness. A sure hit against forgetting.
